3 Points To Consider Before Committing To A Game Idea | Game Development Tips

An Awesome Game Idea is the base of any game that has ever gained popularity

but how do you even know if your game idea is a good one?

On top of that, just having an awesome game idea does not mean you will be able to accomplish it.

This is why, before Committing to a Game Idea you have to ask yourself a bunch of questions

to make sure that the idea is worth pursuing

and that you alone or with whatever team that you have,

you will be able to execute this idea to make a complete game out of it

which would be worth playing by your player base and have a higher chances of becoming a commercial success.

In this article, I’m going to list out some point that i ask myself frequently when I’m evaluating a game idea that i have had.

So, let’s not beat around the bush anymore and get started with it.

This Post is Part of the – Game Development Tips Series, in which i give tips and tricks that will increase your productivity and make your life easier as a game developer whether you are making a 2D Game or A 3D Game.

3 Points To Consider Before Committing To Your Game Idea - Game Development Tips - Featured Image

#1 – What are you bringing to the table? | The General Unique Game Idea of your Game

You can consider Game Idea as a vague picture that you have in your head or on paper

of either a rough story line,

a mental picture of something interesting happening in your game

or basically anything that you think will be enjoyable for the player to play.

It should be something around which you can create your game world.

While coming up with the core game idea

you have to consider what you are bringing to the table for your players.

As customers, your players are presented with a ton of options in every genre of gaming.

So don’t look at developing games from a funnel vision

while putting yourself the developer at the center of the development process

but instead look at it from the perspective of a player

and think whether in a Battle Royale between the new and old games of the same genre,

are you bringing something new and refreshing to your player base.

What you also need to be careful about here is to be critical of your game idea

and also to not make your core game ideas too complicated.

’cause if your players feel that they have to learn a ton of things before even starting to enjoy your game,

a lot of them will completely skip playing your game.

#2 – Are you Over-reaching With Your Game Idea?

The Next point that you have to consider is

the Size and Skill Level of your Game Development Team

and based on that you have to conclude whether you would be over-reaching with a game idea or not.

If you conclude that you are indeed over-reaching

then you will either have to cut down specific parts of your game idea

or take some time to learn new skills

using which you will be able to accomplish those game ideas.

For Example, If your game idea revolves around an interesting looking fantastical world

but your team does not have people who can turn your game ideas into 2D or 3D game assets

then you will either need to take a lot of time to master those skill (This is a Problem of Time),

hire someone that can do it (This is the Problem of Money)

or modify those game ideas into something that you can accomplish (This is the Problem of Not Fulfilling Your Initial Vision).

So, you have to be extremely careful and find the correct balance between

things that you want to do and things that you can do.

You also have to make sure that if you remove something from your game ideas

it does not have a huge effect on the Playability of your game

and it is still true enough to your vision for the game that you are satisfied with it.

while if you are adding something new to your game ideas,

make sure that the amount of work required to accomplish this new game idea

is appropriate for the value that this new game idea will be adding to your game.

#3 – Who Is The Target Audience For Your Game?

The final point that you should consider before committing to your game idea is

Who is the Target Audience for your game?

This is a really important point to consider because finally these are the people who are going to buy and play your game.

Which also means that they should be at the core of your game development process.

If you don’t understand your audience, their expectations, their purchasing power and other important things related to them,

it is completely possible that all your hard work on your game will go down the drain.

When developing your Core Game Idea, Game Mechanics, Characters, or basically anything about your game you can ask yourself some questions like

  • What do players expect from this Genre of Games?
  • Do my Character and World designs suit the taste of my Audience?
  • Will players have fun playing my Game if i add this particular Complex Game Mechanic to it?
  • Is my Audience mostly English Speaking people?
  • Is the Audience for my games small Kids, Teenagers or Adults? Or is it a Family Game?
  • Am i collecting any sort of information from my Audience? Is any of it Personally Identifiable according to the Law?
  • Is my Game Content Controversial? Politically or Otherwise.

and many other questions.

Asking all these questions and knowing answers to them is extremely important

because by using them, you will be able to understand your player base and be compliant to the various laws worldwide.
